Charmed & Strange - Fans of Yoav
Last night was our third time seeing Yoav, and this time we brought along two of our friends. Cassie had missed out the last time, due to her being four hours underage. Yoav actually put us on his guest list this time because of Cassie not being able to get in last March. Our other friend, Mel, had never heard any of his music before, but we were certain she would really love it. The show this time was a bit harder to enjoy, mainly because the audience couldn't seem to shut up and listen, but we had a good time all the same.|
We arrived at the Live Lounge just after 7, and were almost at the front of the line (just one person ahead of us). Sadly we weren't able to get in for the soundcheck this time, but it gave Cassie and Mel a bit of a chance to get acquainted. After maybe 20 minutes/half an hour, we saw Yoav come out. He waved at us and said he'd put us on the list, which reassured Cassie (she was a bit nervous about not being able to get in again). We were all pretty surprised that he remembered us, so that was cool. : )
Shortly after that, they let us into the venue and we got ourselves situated. Yoav took the stage sometime after 10 and opened with Sometimes... Mel was blown away. I think it's safe to say that she fell in love with his music as hard and fast as we did when we first heard him perform. Cassie seemed to be having a good time as well, though the crowd made it really hard to fully enjoy the music. Still, we all tried to tune it out as much as possible, and didn't let it ruin our evening.
Yoav played all of the songs from Charmed & Strange except Angel and the Animal, plus Wasteland Waltz and his cover of Idiotheque, which I'd really been hoping to hear. I'm positive that I will never get tired of watching him play. I hope I have many more opportunities to do so in the future.
After the show, we stuck around in the hope that he'd come out to talk to people and sign CDs. It took a while, but eventually we got our chance. Unfortunately, we were only allowed to see him one at a time, but whatever. I went up ahead of Matt, Cassie and Mel, and I presented him with another card I'd made, this time with a triptych I'd drawn inspired by the end of The Kindly Ones. That got us talking about Neil Gaiman, and how he hasn't had a chance to meet him yet, despite meeting plenty of people who know him. He also mentioned that he'd kept the first drawing I'd given him, which I was really touched by. Then he signed one of my CDs, and one I'd picked up for one of my co-workers. I told him about the crappy music they make us listen to at the store where I work, and how Club Thing and Feist were pretty much the only things on there worth listening to. At this point I was starting to feel like I was taking up too much of his time, so I thanked him again, got a hug, and headed off. That was easily the best part of the evening. :D
Cassie went up after me, and got her chance to thank him for getting us in for free. She also complimented his John Lennon t-shirt, and he said that people kept asking if it was a picture of himself on the front. She got a hug as well, and then it was Matt's turn. Matt and Yoav got to talking about Neil, too, which is a subject I'm sure we all have a lot to say about. After that, we had to wait a bit for Mel to have her chance, as someone had butted in line ahead of her. Once she did get up there, she told him about how this was her first time hearing him, and how inspired she was by his music. She seemed to be on such a high over it all, and it was contagious. She says she definitely plans to be there when he comes back to Ottawa, so that's awesome. More converts!
We all really hope he'll come back this way before too long. We'll definitely be there when he does. : )
